Bike and Brew

So you're all invited for our first bike repair and beer bottling event.  If one or both of those two things doesn't get your attention, well, we'll surely take note given any suggestions you send us via the contact us links.  But for this weekend we are are focusing on getting everyone's bikes ready for the spring and doing so with a relaxed afternoon which includes the MakerSpace's first beer bottling session.  Come by this Saturday (March 3rd, 2012) at your convenience between noon and 4pm and checkout the space, ask a bike question, have your bike worked on, or just see what beer brewing is all about.  Lots of tools and bike maintenance will be available free of charge.  Depending on the weather we'll be out in front of the MakerSpace entrance, or keeping warm in the wide open MakerSpace itself.  We hope you'll join us.

Website updates

Recent website updates

I've made a few new changes to the website, which should once again greatly expand the site's usefulness and functionality. First, I've put in a new widget on the Projects Page that lets users browse all projects, and once we get some projects with pictures, I will be upgrading the widget again to a slideshow. Project descriptions also include fields to put in needs, and you can list the project lead and people on the project too. This way, MakerSpace members can build up a portfolio of activity they are involved in, perhaps for those all-important "resume building" purposes.

In the forums, we now have a subscription block that lets people subscribe either to a specfic topic or to all forum posts. I am still working on mailing list integration.

Nov. 1, 2011 Meeting - Web Updates, Cluster Computer

The nerd party continues!

Seriously, MakerSpace is a great place to hang out and have fun if you're in to building things and taking on geeky projects. Of course, when was it ever geeky for a few guys to get together and actually do something as opposed to just watch sports, movies, etc? Maybe this will become a long-term goal of the MakerSpace movement: redefine "nerds" to the people who just sit around watching sports on TV. The cool kids are the ones making stuff at MakerSpace!

October 25, 2011 Meeting - Building a Cluster Computer

Project Updates

Steve got to work today on the new cluster computer, which will run on networked Ubuntu boxes. We're hoping to make something happen in terms of computationally intensive research, though we've got a long way to go.

Nitin and others got a nice setup going for playing music and visualizations, which will surely lead to some nerd parties. Mike signed up as a new member, and at this point is causing a slight debacle over integrating his website (this one) with the existing http://eezily.com/hack.

Overall, we're making some good progress on computer projects, and outreach efforts through the website are underway. It's a great day for making.
